Our previous research with Women in Sport showed the influence of harmful gender stereotypes on boys’ and girls’ behaviours and attitudes towards sport. Research was needed to answer the questions what impact do boys’ behaviours and attitudes have on girls in sport? and what can we do to create positive change on these attitudes, and encourage boys to be allies to girls in sport?
Research was conducted over four stages, beginning with an Expert Consultation to pool current expertise in this area. This was followed by observations of sport / play interactions between boys and girls, and interviews with educators and coaches to hear their perspectives. Primary research via an online forum and depth-interviews with boys and their families was then used to gather detailed insight and context into the lives of boys and family influence. Concluding the research with an innovation workshop to discuss findings and recommendations for action.
A nationwide campaign was created to raise awareness and give advice for how to tackle the ‘gender play gap’, with resources and guides for teachers, sport coaches, and parents about how to avoid stereotypes in sport and support the participation of boys and girls in sport and activity.
The research findings and campaign have featured across a range of media platforms, including TV (e.g. Sky Sports News), news articles and blogs, and social media.
