How can the Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) work with and support schools, careers leaders and education leaders to engage parents in careers education?
The CEC needed to develop a strategic, embedded whole-institution approach to encourage parental engagement. To create systemic change, they needed to understand and change the views of the staff who would be involved in the implementation of the approach.
We used a multi-stage approach, implementing behaviour change theory, to understand how to support and encourage Careers Leaders and Education Leaders in schools/colleges to take a strategic and embedded approach to parental engagement in careers.
This involved behaviour change analysis, using previous reports and behaviour change mapping to develop principles for the approach.
An online workshop with the CEC and its stakeholders was conducted to ideate, build on these principles and develop a suite of ideas for approaches effective in different contexts. Finally, we held depth interviews with Careers and Education Leaders to test these ideas.
Findings were used to develop a whole-school strategy, and to inform training and resources for Careers Leaders and Education Leaders to effectively engage parents in careers education, and to equip parents with the knowledge to confidently engage.
As a result, the CEC developed and issued a suit of resources and training modules for Careers Leaders, Education Leaders and parents.
